Do what I do - just fake it! I just draw a wedge shape with a thumb sticking out of it. In fact, depending on the angle I'm drawing my character, I have to look at my own hands half the time to remember where the thumb goes. Your approach looks pretty good. It'll all come in time. (Maybe that's why we do anthro art - paws are much less complicated than all those fingers & knuckles!)
