For Soolee's 2nd challenge for Windsonde
"One of Queen Tulkiina's braided-leather tail-bands has broken. She is very concerned that without four of them on her tail, she is out of balance with the god Balodius. Go to Grandesque, find a Samhradh to craft a new braided-leather band for you, and present it to the Queen."
I'll write up the short story for this in the morning. For now I'm gonna go pass out *slump*
"I made you a swiss-army tail braid! Why are you giving me that look?"
"Oh, honey that's....nice"
She'd overheard the Queen talking about it. One of her tailbraids snapped again. Some young griffs suspected Tulkiina "broke" her braids just to get youngsters exploring outside of Twistoult's boundaries and learn a little about the world.
Personally, Soolee didn't mind. Not that she had any intention of going to Grandesque. Why would she when she had her own set of claws to ply leather with? Soolee was certain no craftsgriffin would think up what she presented before the Queen.
"Dearie, what is that?" The old bird, blind in one eye, used her one good orb to peer sideways at the strange thing Soolee held.
"It's your new tail braid!"
"Erm..."
"I skipped a lot of evening feedings to make it," continued Soolee, "it's got some glowy water I kept from the Turtle Festival. That'll be good for lighting up dark places. And here's a quill so you can write new hymns and things when the mood strikes you. Oh oh and here is the twisty metal thing I found a few days ago at a human camp. I think they use it to pop out corks from bottles and that's just genius and we definitely need those. You too, cuz you got all them bottles there," she gestured to the pottery lining Tulkiina's aery walls, "and sometimes you just can't quite get the cork out with those big fingers. And there's a make-it-bigger glass so you can make the things look bigger when you're working with small things or reading stuff. I got one at home I use for working with tiny bitty things. And I also put on a knife so if you get attacked, you got something to protect yourself with.
And this," she pointed to a weird round gourd-like object tightly wrapped within the braid, "well I don't know what this is but it looks like you could keep snacks in it. And who doesn't like snacks?"
"Honey I don't think--"
"Do you like it?" Soolee beamed.
"I..."
Tulkiina looked into the little griffin's eyes. She was so excitable, this Soolee. Always full of ideas and manic energy, but she could never sit still during morning lessons. She did poorly on tests, but not for lack of intelligence. Tulkiina suspected Soolee would be at the top of the class if only the hyperactive bat hawk gryph would pay attention to more than just magic and mechanics. Yet ask her a question about Windsonde mythology or history, even current events, and she couldn't tell you the difference between a Skekrill Natchbragh and Queen Maud himself.
It was going to get her in trouble one day, big trouble. But Tulkiina didn't have the heart to dampen Soolee's enthusiasm. Maybe, with a little patience, that hyperfocus and energy could be useful to Twistoult.
"I'll, erm, wear it proudly dear. But maybe only on special occasions. I can't flash something so...fancy, around Twistoult. It would make the other griffins jealous."
"Ahh, hm, ok."
"Also what would the gods think, seeing me favoring one of them over the others. It would invite trouble on our clan."
"Oh I thought of that already!" pipped Soolee, "I've got 3 more at home!!"
Tulkiina sighed. Looked like another tailbraid was going to "break" again very soon.
