I'm not trying to advocate anything, but what if-- just IF-- Pokemon didn't reproduce via the ordinary hanky-panky? What if the egg really did pop out of nowhere like magic? I mean, they never say where the egg comes from. The old man isn't a dirty perv constantly watching Pokemon pass down egg moves (ifyouknowwhatImean) after all!

Yes, Serperior and Raichu can breed. Gotta love that Ground egg group. Also, you can tell the Raichu is a male from its tail, so the Serperior is female. That means the egg contains a baby Snivy. Just in case you were wondering.

Hm. I always figured the old couple were either really unobservant (as old people are wont to be) or just kept saying that to avoid having to give the kid the talk.

Most random thing, but...I haven't seen a shirt like the old man's wearing in a long time... XD Do love the confused looks on the Pokemon's faces, too. "Man...we're Pokemon and we don't even know how it happens. o.o"
Also, I always thought the old couple just didn't want to explain...that kind of thing to a ten year old. Buuuut, that's just me. The fact that this place is on Route 34 doesn't help my perception of it at all, haha.
