Hmm well I'm gonna have to make some pieces for my next suit so might have to give foam a go :3 Are those pieces kinda squishy then?

Not really they aren't made from the foam you say make heads with, they're made from foam sheets that are like 30 cents a pop. Google fun foam sheets and like michaels should pop up with something by the brand Creative.

How do you get the foam to keep that sort of bent shape? How it's kind of rounded instead of totally flat?

I kind of want to try this now, there's a cosplay piece I'd really like to own but it's too expensive to buy a plastic or metal one, haha.

Foam is made with plastics, heat plastics and they heat form. Sooo yeah simply apply heat. I hold the foam over an electrical stove then bend it into shape, you can also use a hair-dryer or a heat gun.
