This is Pancake,, I adopted HIM from the Baldwin Park Animal Center in L.A California. He literally had only the day to live that he was pulled out of there, because as I've come to discover when they tell you a cat has 5 days at at a southern california shelter it really means they only have 4 days because they euthanize in the moring on the 5th day. Horrid. He was flown up to me here in San Francisco and has been with me some time now with Cooper, the calico sweetie who was flown up here with him at the same time. They said on Pancake's intake information that he was 9 months old. uhhhh NO. Vet thought he might be 10, but it was a very quick check and I'm actually wondering now if he's closer to 15 years. He's just the sweetest little thing even though he looks so cranky. I just adore this little cat and is poor little ears he had a rock hard thing, either a rock or lump of wax in his ear that the vet pulled out. Poor baby and he's almost totally deaf :(.
I am in the middle of helping other cats from L.A, I have a few commissions to finish up but please be patient :). Because of the kitty situation with the other cats I'm a little pressed for time, but I won't be after next week. Thank you for waiting :).

How could they mistake his age so drastically?
I wonder if they did that on the paperwork hoping someone would want the "kitten" sooner or if they just didn't care.
Poor guy, here's hoping he has a long healthy life ahead of him with you.
Shelters here seem to bust their ass trying to make sure every adoptable animal has a chance to get a home before they get filled up. They don't seem to want to euthanize animals except when they are overcrowded and even offer discounts on adopting multiple cats, send some cats out to local Petco's to get them homes. I don't know if this counts Animal Control here though.

I did a google search on cat age last night and looked up images of cats from age 15 - 20 and actually I'm wondering now if he might be closer to 18 years. He looks it with how his face is all wrinkled up and not only that, it's difficult now to tell a cats age as their food quality improving and dental care. I don't know WHY they dumped him at the shelter and I wish I did so I could just have a nice long chat with that owner. He was turned in as stray, I suspect to avoid the surrender fee, very typical. He is NOT stray he's just such a dumpling. He is such a good boy I didn't even have to show him where the litter box is and he had no problem using the newspaper I use for litter, since it's a lot more clean and easy vs typical cat litter. He found it himself, always uses it, never makes a lot of noise, never scratches or scratches furniture, is very affectionate and prefers human company. He eats like a horse. Just a wonderful cat who had a terrible owner who didn't care if he lived or died.
It is possible he might have been turned in as a stray from someone who found him after he was dumped in the wild. Though more likely it is as you describe.
Just this summer I found a little black kitten (which of course, kittens are more likely to be human friendly but anyway) that I had to take to the shelter because when I tried to introduce him to our adult cat she didn't want anything to do with him. Sucks really though because he was such a loving cat.

I don't know. If a family honestly, truly can't afford their animal, and can't find a friend or someone trustworthy to take care of it, I'd rather he or she get turned over to a reputable shelter instead of let go or starved. However, more likely, said family just doesn't want to spend their pleasure money on taking care of animals (tough luck: animal is more important than newest video game >:( )
Yes I just hope that if a person absolutely has no way for someone else to care for the animal that it not be turned into a kill shelter to avoid the surrender fees. One can easily say it's a stray and do so. That's how Pancake ended up. He's the sweetest most loving cat ever. No way he's a stray.
