Well, no wonder you didn't get good shots of the lightning, there's a pine tree in the way.
Lightning, even when you have the good stuff, so to speak, is difficult to capture. It doesn't like to sit still for longer than a few milliseconds. Often, one needs to shoot repeatedly until a good shot is gotten.
