“BUUUURRRPP!” echoed within the hut, drawing a sleepy protest and tail whip to their backside from one of their two other roommates, twined thoroughly about each other as the Children of the Egg were wont to do. Social creatures that they’d become, sleeping with anyone and everyone meant nothing to them now. Even that term had taken on a different meaning with them.
Not like them, Luna knew. Not like a Dreamer whose other half had awakened!
“What food?”
“That! Was a Hawaiian pizza. Awesome, yeah?” she said to her counterpart. Her whole. The mind that completed her. Speaking out loud was a reflex that she hadn’t been able to replace with telepathy, yet.
He had taken on the name of her uncle, Sammy, making their new name, their new identity, Luna-Sammy. Her family had not taken this news well. But then they never really understood her. Black sheep of the family that she was.
“Want silver thing. Senses taste so good!” he ‘spoke’ to her with his whiskers questing. He had made very clear that those were his by shocking her, literally, when so much was his hers. Like being able to move their shared body.
“No!” she batted the fork away from their whisker. It thrummed where it had impaled into the wall. “Try this next…” she suggested instead, pulling a platter with a whole salmon on it closer.
“What that? Scary! It shines in eyes!”
“No, no, it is good!” she had to work to calm his fears. Being only a few weeks old, her other half was a bit flighty.
“I am not flight!”
There were also no secrets between yin and yang in their body!
Luna-Sammy popped their jaws and scratched at their gums. The second row of their teeth had finally stopped growing in itching madness. They had been told by the golden eyes that they will regrow teeth as needed through their whole life. So much to brush! It took them eight and thirty minutes to brush all the curved fangs! By the waves themselves, it had hurt to feel them grow in. Now though, whenever they opened their mouth they could no longer see anything in front of them! Just a nose bridge that would make a crocodile green with envy.
The feminine half of them showed the male half the wonderful taste of the fish as they bit into it. The red flesh and the crunch of the scales. They swallowed the whole salmon in two bites, with the bulge of the meal traveling down their throat before disappearing into the expanse of their shared body. Their teeth only ached a little now against the forces of their bite. The long, pointed tip of their tongue ran along their lips in thought.
Luna fell out of synchronization with Sammy, much to his alarmed dismay. Back in her own mind, she wondered if maybe she was too far gone to recognize how much she’d changed. She could feel her jaws gnawing the last remnants of their meal between a forest of interwoven teeth.
And then… a moist and furiously glowing whisker bulb smacked her in the eye. Her head recoiled in shock, a sudden feeling that she should have known, and then she was welcomed back into the embrace of Sammy. His soul to her heart. They knew that over time her mind and his would bond so tightly together that they could never be separated. Like the Revered Elder that had visited.
For now though, Luna-Sammy felt the sensation inside and out of being full. His perspective and hers entwined. They felt like dreaming, the thread of an idea tugged at their awareness that they obeyed. The changing Dreamer had gathered a pillow in one hand from the Children of the Egg’s bed to rest their head upon. In sleep, they dreamed of a song that could capture the world.
