I have a pirated Photoshop CS4, but I prefer using Paint.NET.
Your way is quick, but can be sloppy.
If you try to cut a rectangular picture in a square fashion, you will crop out part of the image itself. (As seen in your example.)
Aspect ratio is a big key.
You don't want the image to get squished in any direction.

Nyah, I could have not cut some off if I wanted to, could have also dragged the box outside of the canvas and made her original rectangle into a square and then filled with her same background color. I like icons kinda going off the edge so I cropped it thata way. How would you go about it, out of curiosity?
Here is how I did it.
I first cropped the gray part around the image, just so the edges of the head were touching the edges of the canvas.
Then I just used the resize command in Paint.NET to resize it to 10% size, keeping aspect ratio, so it ended up as 61 x 98.
I could make it a little bigger, but this was a rough estimate of 10%.

If i have to Resize something i´m just using the free Image Resizer from RPworld
don´t know if there is a English version of it
it´s pretty easy to use so you dont really have to understand German for it.
