Yeah, unless you have a foreign keyboard, you got two options: Using Character Map, or memorizing the keystroke.
In é's case, it's ALT+0233 on the numeric keypad. Surprisingly, this "feature" has existed since the days of DOS, of course the codes where 3-digit back then instead of 4.
