Four important points in my setting's history, along with those that helped bring the world to those points.
Discovery- Artimedo Mulmores
The World Expo, in the middle region city of Lummon. Artimedo Mulmores prepares to reveal his life's work: A free-flowing energy source harnessed from far underground, by an invention he calls the Deep Engine. His creation is poised to change the world- even despite a looming conflict between the region of Brunn.
One-Last - Tebne Holts
The middle region soon became the center of everything, thanks to the Grandevice Energy Company. GDEC was responsible for making Deep Engine into a powerful, efficient energy source, allowing the world to advance at an impressive rate. However their power began to extend into other things, making the company more formidable than even the region it's located in. However, this expanse of power hasn't gone unnoticed. A group of people from the middle region calling themselves "One-Last" and lead by a Slindell named Tebne, aims to dismantle the overpowered company by any means.
Seperation - Attibeo Bavi
Long after the rise and fall of GDEC, many things brought the world into an almost unlivable ruin. A group planned to rise above the layer of noxious clouds, breaking through the sky with giant pillars to live on. For nearly a century, life above prospered, many living above not even knowing what the ground was. When resources suddenly began to dwindle, the head of each Pillar sent down a Surveyor, someone appointed to scour the world below for a way to survive. However, the ground was still populated, their own resources just as sparse.
Reunion - Marmus Arlo
The ground and the sky were reunited after many hardships, the people from both realizing that living together is much better than perishing in seperation. Thanks to researchers from the Pillars, the need for a centralized Deep Engine was no more, replaced by technology small enough to be carried. The world was slowly becoming as it once was, the Pillars being torn down after no longer of need. Marmus Arlo, an apprentice to the archivist Welgrove, spends his time discovering things forgotten by both ground and sky.

Reminds me a little bit of the Final Fantasy 7 story, with the upper crust people literally living on upper layers of a pizza disc and all their pollution and lower class suffering underneath them. The characters are nothing like it, nor the architecture. There are just so many metaphors you can make for the Jungian archetype of bourgeoisie and proletariat…
Google will report there are definitely a finite (and small integer count) number of basic plots. What makes a story unique are the characters within, and the blend of plot threads woven together in combination. Star Wars for instance has a Boy Meets Girl story, but also "The Little Tailor" type story, where great things are expected of someone boastful/who has no idea how to succeed; as well, there's redemption of the outcast, the man who learned better (adventure beyond a world they previously knew), and so forth. It's fun and unique for the characters, places, and events - minutiae germane to the storytelling process.
