The sun was beating down, warmth clung tightly to the grass, warming his feet as he stood, staring at the walled area before him. Frost watched as the near-sentry spoke to someone behind the large wooden wall protecting the village. After a few minutes the near-sentry nodded, and the gate to the Igwulf village opened. Stepping into the small enclosure, Frost saw nothing but various mounds of earth scattered across the village, with a few various colored Igwulf’s, staring back at the stranger in their midst. They soon went back to their day to day activities, keeping an eye on the strange coat wearing Igwulf. Nervously Frost shuffled forward, taking in the sights. He had yet to actually been inside an Igwulf village. Reed had assured him that they were pleasant enough communities, this particular one being tightly knit, with neighbor looking out for neighbor. An odor drifted through the air, strong and powerful. Near the center was a large pot, with two Igwulf attending to it, one adding a log to the simmering fire beneath, the other stirring the concoction. Now closer to one of the mounds Frost noticed a door and small circular window framed into the mound. For a moment he though he saw a flash of movement from the window. Looking around, the feeling of being watched was creeping over him, an occasional mutter, the villagers quickly turning when his gaze met theirs. He wasn’t prohibited, but it didn’t seem he was welcome to this village either. Turning to leave he nearly tripped, seeing the small red creature scamper between his legs. Wheeling back around he could feel it climbing up his back, its tiny claws scratching up his jacket as it continued up. “Hey! Get off ther-“ Frost was cut short, feeling his arm weighed down. Looking to his right was an Igwulf pup, hanging from his arm, looking up at him with a bewildered gaze of curiosity. Then feeling his jacket sag he saw another pup, having climbed into his jacket pocket, nuzzling up against him, cooing softly as it curled up. Frost would have tried to pull her out of his pocket, had he not jumped in alarm, as several small sharp teeth dug into his tail. Yelping he tried to wheel back around as several more pups joined suit, climbing up on him, looking through his pockets, their curiosity being at an all time high with the new stranger coming to their home. Frost looked around, dumbstruck, exchanging glances with several alarmed looking Igwulf that had now emerged from their dome shaped homes. Frost chuckled nervously as the pup on his head began tugging on his ears. At least he was welcome by someone.
So I had a dream where I was exploring an Igwulf village, looking about and feeling generally unwelcome, until being greeted by the villages younger residents. It was a pleasant enough dream, which inspired me to put it to paper. This is the result, with some collaboration from Reed, who provided a few references for Igwulf pups.
