I can imagine that after Simoun's confession and death in Chapter 39 of El Filibusterismo, he enters Purgatory and is surrounded by smoke that symbolizes his anger and vengeance. He sings "I Thank God" by Maverick City Music while walking through the thick smoke in the Terrace of Wrath.
As he reaches Heaven, he meets Maria Clara, Elias, Kapitan Tiago, Crispin, Sisa, Juli, Pia Alba, and his father Don Rafael.
