Maybe there could be giant sand worms like the Junundu in Nightfall?

In Nightfall, some of the sand is made of glass and thus is so hot you'd spontaneously combust if you stood on it AND constantly emits fatal levels of sulphur that would kill any human in minutes. The sand worms are allied local wildlife that live in this glass sand that help you travel across it...by eating you.

I'm serious.

They eat you, and integrate you into their nervous system. You then tell them where you want to go and they take you there, fighting anything unfriendly along the way, and spit you out at your destination!
