A shrill screeching noise echoed through the wastes. Sol knew he was close to the entrance of the underground compound, and that it would also be heavily guarded.
He stepped not lightly, but defiantly, making no effort to muffle the sound of his approach. He had fought many of the S.A.S.R. creations--enough to know that there was no sneaking up on them, and he was certain that he was already being monitored by hidden cameras or satellite imaging anyway. Sol wanted them to know he was coming. He wanted every damned scientist and operative in that facility to feel the terror of his approach.
He held Kaiser loosely at his side, barely supported and perfectly balanced by his fingers. The two ends of the swallow-style blade reflected the pale orange and beige of the sands and cliffs that surrounded him. He had chosen to come alone and only lightly armed, a testament to his sheer strength and prowess which he wanted all humans to witness. The humans had given Sol a code-name that they used when communicating with each other over secure channels. They called him "Ares," after a war-god from their ancient mythology. They could not know just how apt the name was that they chose for him. He was here to demonstrate that.
Another shriek, this time followed by a second... third... fourth... until the screeches of at least a hundred concealed creatures rose to a din that caused Kaiser to reverbrate in Sol's now tightly-gripped fist.
A rushing of air...the quick flash of a sword...the sound of a small body smacking into the ground and sliding a small distance, along with the pitter-patter of droplets of blood that sprinkled the ground behind it.
Sol got a quick look of the hideous creature he had just neatly bisected: its grotesque figure was like that of a vulture that had been baked in the sun. It's ugly head was covered in wrinkled brown skin and was punctuated by a gigantic curved beak and glowing yellow eyes. On its sickly, birdlike legs, it had a long, deadly spur and while most of its body resembled a condor-like species, it had a freakish, long, lizardlike tail with a spade on the end, tipped in a sharp hook. Sol, knowing the practices of the S.A.S.R., knew that every talon, its beak, and the blade on its tail were some sort of alloy. This creature only had one purpose, and that was to eviscerate anything that opposed the S.A.S.R.
Sol heard more of them swooping near him. He stood his ground, his feet planted and his claws digging into the dust, waiting for the next one to dare take a shot at him.
Instead, he had to dive out of the way as a ball of liquid fire shot through the air at him, dripping napalm as it arced over the spot he had just stood a second ago.
"No shit!" He hissed.
Before the other creatures had a chance to reorient upon him, Sol raised Kaiser in front of him with two hands and brought it down upon his upward-thrusted knee. The swallow-style blade broke into two individual swords in a bright flash of light and released energy. He swept one in a wide arc in front of him to deflect another incoming fireball, and brought the other one down over the neck of one of the swooping mutants.
"Come at me, you wretched abominations! I hope there are enough of you that you might provide me with a moment of mild entertainment before I destroy every last one of your creators!"A commission for
