Archbishop Pyratus Heolfr is perhaps the most reviled man across the continent of Landor. A man with a soul and heart of pure hate with magic just as firey. Despite being a holy man, he has long abandoned his holy prayers and incantations for combat and instead turned to pyromancy.
He was once an ordinary man living among monks in the Holy Empire, but one day became heartless, manipulative, and scheming. He climbed the ranks of the church after a mysterious fire burnt down his old monastery, eventually becoming the second strongest man in the Empire, only after the Emperor himself: Archbishop of the Capital. Soon after, he mobilized his own military force, the Red Suns, alongside the empire's military to attempt to capture the northern lands and cleanse the world of what he saw as an "unholy race", the Magickans.
The Magickans are a unique culture on the continent of Landor. They live in the far north, shrouded in ice and mountains, and practice the art of sorcery safely within it's borders. It used to have a kingdom uniting it all in ancient times, but after a revolt from the people, the queen decided to use a powerful cryomancy to destroy the kingdom and blanket it all in snow and ice. Or at least, that's how the legend goes. After this, the Magickans formed separate tribes and civilizations, but were once again united after the construction of the Academy of Magicka rose to power, essentially building a civilization united around research, sorcery and knowledge. And to keep them all united, the new Magickan queen enforced a secular, stately atheistic society.
This immediately drew anger from the Holy Empire, who had dreams of incorporating the north into it's territory. And so, hate began to spread within the hearts of the Empire's people, which Pyratus used to his advantage. He acted as a demagogue, stoking the flames of hatred and religious thought to call for the complete decimation of Magicka.
And so, the invasion began.
The first to fall was Orion. A trading city on the southern border of Magicka. The sight of this prosperous city known for it's parties and opulence burning to the ground was a shocking sight to the people of Magicka.
The forces of the Magickans mobilized and met the Red Suns near Orion. The Magickans did well at first, but the might of the empire was too much to handle.
It wasn't long until the capital city fell.
The queen and the masters of the academy fled north, towards the former capital of the ancient kingdom, and told the military forces to retreat with them. Few survived.
Under the control of Pyratus Heolfr, the people of Magicka suffered. People killed in the streets, pushed out of their homes, put into forced labor. People remember this cruelty to this very day. Pyratus already began his plans to "imperialize" the Magickan nation. Buildings fell, art was destroyed, books were burned.
However, the empire's army built of hate was about to meet one fueled by one even deeper.
The few that made it to the north found it even colder than they could imagine. Magickans were naturally built for cold weather, having a permanent winter's coat of fur and overheating easily. However, these temperatures were nothing short of freezing, leaving even Magickan born people frozen to death.
However, people made it. Ignited by the rage in their hearts, and a burning desire for revenge.
And so, they prepared.
The soldiers were given access to forbidden spells, trained ruthlessly, and made into the greatest soldiers that ever touched Magicka, given the name of the ancient kingdom of Magicka to honor them: the Magickan word for Dark Moon. The Magickans sent a message to the neighboring nation of Malimore for assistance, as they are surely next, and soon both forces mobilized.
However, Pyratus was smart.
The under prepared Dark Moon army found themselves face to face with a large force of the Red Suns. Outnumbered and tired, they expected no chance to win.
Until a man suddenly burst forth from the lines of the Dark Moons.
Adam Blaccat, a black cat armed with nothing but his greatsword, burst forth and charged at Pyratus, narrowly dodging arrows and blasts of magic, separating him from the group and wounding him. Adam soon lost his life, but this distracted the Red Suns enough for the Dark Moons to gain the upper hand, using the more familiar terrain and greater resistance to the elements to push the Red Suns back. And soon, the Dark Moons and Malimori army retook the capital, liberating the Magickan people and uniting them even closer. While the Queen had met opposition in the kingdom prior to this, it was almost entirely purged by this event, bringing the once separated people all under one banner born under a collective hatred of hate itself.
The Emperor was assassinated, and Pyratus lost his position of Archbishop. However, he had survived the war, now living in hiding. People say he's still lurking around the empire, whispering hateful thoughts into people's ears and plotting for a return to power. A flame may die out, but it may one day be reignited by one even stronger.
Thanks again to Tem for the request! ^^ And thank you for reading my story!
