First pass at Jack. He's a former English teacher who was a talented enough writer to become the next great novelist, but his wife's death broke his spirit and made him a bitter, nihilistic man. The zombie apocalypse shook him out of his funk, forcing him to look out for his students as more than just a glorified spell-checker. He migrated up from PA to Umbagog as he helped shuttle survivors north, protecting them from zombies and Half-Deads and becoming a very proficient zombie-killer. His only close friend is Parker, the unusually well-read educated janitor. They like to have long conversations about books they've read and toss literary references back and forth.
