This isn't just concept art for John, the Preacher. It's also a WIP of the advertising banner thing I'm working on. It'll be a kind of Cowboy Bebop style monochromatic piece with a lot of symbolism and rhymey goodness. The other sketch (in the lower right) is Corpse-Eater and Michael confronting each other for the first time in early spring, when snow flurries still kick up occasionally. They're at a standoff and Michael has one of Corpse-Eater's ravens. Michael is one of the first Ubers in Umbagog so Corpse-Eater doesn't initially know what to make of him. She learns quickly though.
John was an EMT before and during the zombie outbreak. He was exceptionally talented at saving lives, but after getting bitten and managing to survive infection, he turned to saving souls. He credits his survival to the church group he regularly attended out of habit, not faith. He had spiritual visions during his fever and believes God let him live for a purpose. He put down the medical gear and donned a priest's collar and started giving sermons at his church (which was fortified as a sanctuary). Now he leads The Community, a group that believes the zombie apocalypse is God's test on mankind and that surviving is as much about spiritual fulfillment as satisfying physical needs in this time of crisis. A philosophy not without merit. It's one of the more stable groups in Umbagog, though the exorcism "experiments" John performs on zombies in the shed out back makes some nervous and isn't talked about. He believes the undead can be saved, but his zeal about finding a "cure" can be unsettling.
However John is a very kind and humble person. He's the moral center of the group and while passionate and almost zealous about his faith, he's extremely open to refugees of other religious backgrounds. As an EMT he learned various coin and card tricks to entertain patients and he still performs to amuse his flock. His medical training still comes in handy too because, while he'll put more stock in prayer and faith healing now than his own abilities, he still patches up the injured and sick as best he can. Groups are sometimes sent out to find books (esp. religious texts) because he wants to preserve as much of human history as possible. John believes the answer to surviving the apocalypse lies in religion and, while he's a professed Catholic and his sermons mostly derive from the Bible, he's often seen reading other religious books to broaden his theological knowledge.
Another brain baby of Omnivorous, partner in crime.
