It's not really a prison.
This owl and all the owls in the background will be released back into the wild.
They're all either injured or came in as babies and have been rehabilitated and conditioned for release.
I took quite a lot of photos of them flying today trying to get movement shot practice. I only liked how 2 of them came out so I will be sharing those.

Not willingly.
The only reason a bird comes back is because it can't survive on it's own and is destined to fail.
This year a Mississippi Kite came back. We'll give him one more chance. If he survives we'll be happy. If not his future won't be very happy.
Young birds we release have not come back. Usually it's injured adults who just don't have the strength.
We raise the birds to be wild. Our Great Horned Owls all have a foster mom.
She is flightless but she has not raised a kid who couldn't hack the wild. She teaches them how to be owls.

She is Aggie, she cannot fly, but she will cut you if you come near the babies. <3
