That's very interesting.
Do you suppose it could have been done with one long shot and the use of the flash at the start of the exposure, or would the flash wash out too much?

That would work too, but wouldn't be quite as effective.
Splitting them, you get additional darkness values that wouldn't be present in an all-round well-enough exposed single shot.

i think a long exposure and a flashlight would work better for this

A flash light would provide uneven lighting.
Mind you, it could give an interesting effect by letting you choose which areas to highlight but knowing just how long to hold the light on a particular area would be very difficult.

yes, but you might be able to create some cool effects with it. unlike a typical flash.
