This is what I was thinking of going for roughly- rotating the entire couch/TV/speaker setup 90 degrees to open up the space.
New for this shot, I modeled a copy of the Cat Friendly Modular Bookshelf which my dad's helping build me one of.
Main problem with this layout is that there's really no good path from the front door to the kitchen. (the camera is sitting *in* the swing of the front door, and the kitchen is the gap next to the Lilo and Stitch poster).
Incidentally, the right most gap is actually the stairs which I didn't bother to model.
There's also the fact that the couch is no longer in the center of the soundfield that the 7.1 speaker set creates....which means that 3D sound won't be quite as amazing as it is in the current layout. :\
There'd be a lot more room in the middle of the livingroom this way, and the bookshelf would have wallspace, but I'm not sure how good it would be for watching TV and playing games, which is what the room is primarily for!

With a cat, the bookcase could be put up against the window so the cat can look out. If you always keep the blinds closed then the window is not really being used. Then the sofa can go against the wall with the TV under the staircase. One problem with this is the TV will be in the kitchen path. Too easy to knock into the TV when bringing stuff to the kitchen. If the sofa can fit on the short wall, then the TV can set in front of the bookcase. Makes a crowded configuration.
If the bookcase is not started yet, could the bookcase be designed so the TV and "TV stuff" fit in the bookcase? Have it a two piece setup where the lower section is wider for the TV and cabinets, then the upper part more a bookcase with the cat cubbyholes and steps. Only drawback is the cat's tail may end up coming down over the TV screen.
As SeberHusky said, a small room needs small furniture. But you have to use what you have.
