I found out about a bridge in Paris (and apparently there are many more places like this, not just France) where people put a lock on a fence (or something else) to symbolize their relationship with a girlfriend, boyfriend, family member, or friend. It can be anything, really. After they clip it on, they throw the key away (in this case, the key goes into the river below). No matter what happens, the lock will always be there to symbolize that those people were a part of each others lives.
