Drawn March 13-24, 2026
After drawing their 2023 sprite at ten times its size, and then putting their hood up and giving them a name, I wanted to do a third piece for Kaoru Morimoto, this time an action shot with their hood up where they live up to their description as a mage. And so I drew them ready to throw a magic blast at a killer robot, standing on a wooden pole in the middle of a lake.
With multiple pieces of higher-res pixel art under my belt at this point, drawing massive ANSI art pieces no longer seemed imposing, but this one in particular drew my attention to how inadequately-equipped most ANSI art apps are compared to pixelart apps. To take the relevant example, to my knowledge as of this writing, no ANSI art app has a Bézier line tool, with the result that every curved shape in this piece was done manually. It also drew attention to the necessity of using the shade characters (░▒▓): apart from the high resolution making them seem less chunky in context, they saved this piece when it came to fuzzier detailing and applying nuanced shading not possible with pixelart blocks in the palette I used.
This ended up taking several days more than my previous art of Kaoru, but I like how it came out. What do you think? :3
