“Night's Grin” is a secret organization born from the rebellion of the first outcast of Clan Erderrus. Its founder — a deviant individual with hair the color of congealed blood — rejected the hypocritical splendor of “perfect” Yunari society. The members of the Grin lurk in darkness; they are few, yet each is a flawless instrument. They take on tasks that official justice prefers to erase quietly, as though they never existed at all. But even the most meticulous efforts to wipe away traces fail: rumors still seep through, like black smoke curling between the cracks of an impeccable wall. Elimination of particularly dangerous deviants, removal of “inconvenient” individuals, hunting those who learned too many forbidden secrets — all of it is carried out without noise, without witnesses, without consequences. “We hunt monsters of a different kind,” runs their unspoken motto. And sometimes not monsters at all.Vespera, known as Faint Smile, is one of the most dangerous huntresses in the organization. Willful, broken inside, she lives for the thrill of the chase — a thrill sweeter to her than any nectar and sharper than any blade. When she follows a trail, only a faint, barely perceptible smile appears in the darkness — the harbinger of the end. Her faithful hound, raised by her own hand from a pup, is the only being to whom Vespera would entrust her back and her life. Together they function as a single organism: whip, beast, and huntress.Who is she truly? The superstitious whisper of a malevolent spirit, a curse that claims those condemned to death. Others see in her a feral Yunari gone mad — one of the “forgotten” who hides in the catacombs beneath the cities and sleeps among beasts. Vespera herself has always loved the darkness of night; the rumors only fueled her amusement and forged her reputation, sharp as the fine blades studding her whip. The whip itself is no mere weapon. It is something alive, demonic — as though a shadow tore itself free from its owner and gained its own will. It writhes through the air with its own malicious grace, anticipating the prey’s movements before the prey even knows them; its tips, studded with thin, almost invisible blades, cut not only flesh but the very air, leaving behind whispers of pain and terror.
Vespera’s reputation among her own kind is as sharp as those blades on her whip — unpredictable, unstable, like a flickering flame in the dark that is about to flare up or gutter out, or burst into a raging inferno, setting ablaze even the hard bodies of Yunari. Her faint smile instills far greater dread than any bared fang: it promises no swift death; it murmurs that the end may come at any moment. Among comrades and fellow killers in her organization she walks unmasked — they are not prey, yet they may become so at any instant. No one knows what thought may suddenly seize her mind. The head of the organization asserts:
“This is not a curse. This is mastery. A potential any Yunari may master.”Yet every one of them will give you the same advice:
“If you glimpse a golden grin in the darkness of night — run and do not look back. And if you feel the beast’s breath on the back of your neck — better end your own life first.”Deviancy — a word that once burned Vespera like a brand. But everything changed when her insatiable hunger for the chase was acknowledged and sanctified by the very Keeper of Order who founded “Night's Grin.” Now she no longer needs to hide and may openly revel in hunting the most fascinating prey — deviants with rare, forbidden abilities, those whom daylight must never see. The pursuit is no longer merely for Q`AR, but for something far greater.“Is it immoral? Yes. Is it fun? You bet it is!” — Faint Smile likes to repeat.“You will never find us unless you truly wish to. But the moment you do wish it — we will find you ourselves.”No one knows how to contact the mercenaries of “Night's Grin.” They say it is enough merely to think of murder — and they already sense your black thoughts. The only question is what you will become: client or quarry? Alas, the choice is not yours — if you fall into the hands of Faint Smile.
