Here you can see the most common form styles Proteus use for their signature forms.
Signature forms are the consistent appearances Proteus personas use to be recognized as themselves. You can read more about this in the Personas document I uploaded.
Out of order: There’s Azeella in the middle. She’s using a standard style form with the classic Changeling face. The Proteus like using this form because it’s so iconic. Yet it’s also rather restrictive in what can be done with it. The standard style always has Caucasian skin colour, minimal scales (especially lacking scales on the face) and most of the time have swept-back blond hair, although the hair can vary more then other features. Small deviations from the standard style can make it unrecognizable and a lot of features clash with the overall aesthetic.
On the left is Mendros using a fae style form. This style was developed to work around the limitations of the standard style. The fae style can have any skin colour, any skin covering, including rough scales, and even fur. Hair and horns are also more diverse in these forms as well.
Finally, to the right is Ravok showing off the draconic style form. As the name suggests, this style is supposed to look like a dragon. While standard and fae styles can be used by any Proteus, only the Proteus with dragon ships can use the draconic form. Some of the features of this form are; a very short mussel instead of a more human like nose, rough noticeable scales, snake like scale patterning on the face, large viper like eyes with slit pupils, large horns with prominent ridging, a long reptilian tail, shaggy unkempt hair, long flat scute style scales on the underbelly, and being highly muscled. Not all these features alone are restricted to the draconic form, but all of them taken in total are. Draconic style forms are also very large. Proteus already tend to be tall, with the average being 6 foot and however many inches they want to throw in. While the draconic form is pushing 8 feet, not including the horns.
There are other styles beyond these three, but they’re less common, and I haven’t developed them as much, so they will have to wait for a future update.
You may also have noticed that these Proteus don’t have linking tendrils, like the ones shown in the last two pictures. Certain body features that often get in the way are commonly shape shifted away when not being used. This is known as ‘hiding’ the body part. Along with tendrils, wings are also commonly hidden when not in use. Some Proteus also prefer to keep their wings, but shrink them until needed.
When discussing Proteus forms their clothing should also be mentioned. Proteus rarely wear real clothes and prefer to form the appearance of clothing from their own bodies. This is for a few reasons. They tend to get tangled up in their clothing when shape shifting, or just drop them and leave their clothes behind. Proteus have a wide bearable temperature range, so they don’t really get cold outside of extreme temperatures. And it’s more convenient to change clothing on the fly without having to go back to a closet and put more on.
Lets go over what each of the characters are wearing. Mendros is wearing robes associated with educated scholars in the Hierarchy. He’s the most accomplished engineer in the Hierarchy. Mendros commonly takes the theoretical discoveries made by the Hierarchy’s top scientists like Jaskyon, or explorers like Thalon, and finds practical applications for them.
Azeella is wearing a Hierarchy military uniform. The black bars on her uniform indicates she’s in the intelligence and recon corps. Azeella is one of the Hierarchy more accomplished spies. Its a field with a lot of competition. Many Proteus aspire to being spies, as it’s one of the most esteemed jobs. Many Proteus see being skilled a spying as something inherently associated with their species identity.
Ravok is wearing gym shorts, specifically the type commonly used in combat sports and training. Pretty much all dragon ship Proteus (with the exception of the smaller Zilant ships) are tough guys, who like showing off their physical and combat prowess.
