Another commission in the works. Here, I decided to add a "Garage" backdrop for the Aerocar, and while cruising the Internet I came across a site that had photos of Edison's lab. It seemed the perfect setting for this "Steampunk" piece.

Three Tails linked me to images featuring two versions of the "Aerocar" which was built in the mid to late 1920s. (One looked like a JN-3 stripped of it's wings.) The idea was a good one, but I agree that such a vehicle would be impractical for Urban use. Too many pedestrians and other things could get sucked into that propeller.
I seem to recall some attempt at doing a propeller powered train car as well, but in pusher form. He might be onto something here, just needs some... refinements. :)
Believe it or not, there is already a company out there that makes a flying car now, only the wing is a para-sail instead of rigid wings. The sail just folds up and goes into the trunk and the rear axle is driven by the engine.

Apparently, one of Gustave Whitehead's early flyers was designed to get up speed on the ground; then the wings would unfold to get lift-off.....http://gustavewhitehead.org/
Really? I've never quite heard a two stage compound steam engine go "Pok Puff-Pow!" yet, but one can never truly say how those type of contraptions will actually sound until they get up close to a running example. For instance, Jay Leno demonstrated one of his Stanley steam engines, and the thing hissed and clanked more like a "Cha-chink! Cha-chink! (Whack!) Cha-chink." (Jim said it was horribly out of "Tune.") The Bessler aeroplane engine was fairly silent, compared to the gasoline engines of the same power and era. More like a "HissHissHissHissHissHiss..." plus a little "FlupFlupFlupFlupFliu..." from that big, wooden prop thrown in. Still... I like your idea of the darn thing being Cantankerous. I have yet to read of any steam powered contraption that ran "Sweet" straight from the shop.
Right. I was asked to draw the "Professor" standing before the Aerocar with one hand on the prop, but I couldn't stand the idea of covering up all that detail. (Well... It might have helped to hide those awful ellipses on the prop guard, but what the heck.) My solution was to draw up the poster showing the character in his "Adventurer" garb, and so the client got a "Double portrait" in a "Two for the price of one" type deal.
