A long overdue commission for a good friend and talented machinist. I was working on the idea while I was living in the Desert, but I just couldn't get it to work. Shortly after moving to Oakland, I decided to scrap my idea of Mr. Foxy being shot from one Ventilator Cowl to another and decided to draw a more "Realistic" situation. Here, the Famous Blue Minoceros has booked passage on board the S. S. Athena, and while enjoying the sun and open sea air, he is startled by a sudden shuddering of the deck, and a blast of steam erupting from several vents. Mr. Foxy, who just happened to be stuck in the Cowl, assures him all is in order.

I have not been around boilers but working on the vehicles and then running back and forth between the shop and inside is about as close as it gets and trying to reassure customers it will get done is still a pain when you don't have a full crew.
On the drawing i can still remember the time i spent on a war ship and heard that over the radio from the engine room when an engine died and they had to get it restarted. The look on the Captains face was jsut priceless when he heard that.

I appreciate your reply because you're one of the people who helps keep this country moving. I don't think the fifteen years I spent in retail could even match one week in a mechanic's shop. Folks tend to think of their cars or vehicles as a part of their family, or at least an important factor in their livelihood. So I can imagine tempers flare, especially over something that takes a little longer to repair than "Usual."
Strange coincidence though. I was drawing up a script in my "Steamfox" story where the helmsman was recalling seeing a look of fear only once on "The old man's" (Captain Crane.) face. This was at a time during a Typhoon where a "Rouge" wave about 50 or more feet high was bearing down on the ship.

Heh! Yeah. No... I think that "Radical" concept of using newfangled Aluminum in the construction of the S.S. Athena was never considered. I was thinking that Mr. Foxy was helping light the boiler, and he got caught in the blowback. Nothing serious mind you, but it was rather dramatic, and hard on his clothes.
