The sun began to rise over Zootopia and bring about a new day. At the front entrance to the ZPD, Nick was already waiting by the door with a foam cup of coffee. He looked at his phone to check the time. “Huh. Not like Carrots to be a few minutes late.” He took a sip from his cup. “Maybe she overdid it with relaxing and watched too many movies? Hope not, because then id be the cause of this.”
Just then, he saw her pull up in her meter maid cart along the curb. She seemed eager and was carrying a notepad and her carrot pen recorder. She noticed Nick and waved to him. “Hey Nick!”
“Hey Carrots!” He said as he waved back. “What took you so long? Normally you're here before me.”
“Tried to take your advice and just chill. But it was harder to do that than I thought.” She held out her notepad. “So I just decided to jot down everything I could about the case and what all we could be discussing with the Chief and Miss Bengalton today.”
Nick had a blank look on his face as he raised his one eyebrow. “You stayed up all night writing notes, instead of watching movies?”
“You got your way of relaxing, and I have mine.” She clipped the carrot pen to her belt and proceeded to head inside.
Nick soon followed and eyed the pen with a grin. “You ready to let me have that back yet?”
“Not just yet slick.” She said with a grin of her own. Nick chuckled softly as he took another sip of his coffee.
In the lobby of the ZPD, they headed up to the front desk to meet Clawhauser who was busy eating a doughnut and watching a Gazelle music video on his phone. “Oh, hey guys.” He finished the doughnut in a single bite and set his phone down. “Chief said you're both to meet up in his office again.”
“We figured,” said Judy. “Has he told you anything about what the case is we're working?”
“Nope.” Clawhauser said casually. “Said it's strictly need to know for only you two. But that's fine. Mystery cases I don't know about keep this place exciting. I get to spend the whole day thinking about what they could be about. I could write a whole crime novel series with the ideas I've come up with.”
Nick couldn't help but make a snark and sarcastic comment. “I'll have to ask you to sign a copy or two for me when you publish them.” Judy gently elbowed him in the arm.
“Anyway,” said Clawhauser. “Chief said to just head up to his office when you guys got here. But I'm not sure he's there himself. I think he went to the bullpen earlier.”
“Huh.” Judy said as she looked towards the hallway to the bullpen. “Well, I'm sure he'll come back to the office soon. We'll head up now.”
Just before she and Nick were about to leave, a female spotted hyena in a light yellowish mailman's outfit and hat approached the front desk. “Excuse me,” she said while looking at her clipboard and holding a small package. “Are you Benjamin Clawhauser?”
“Yes, that's me!” Clawhauser spoke loudly with enthusiasm. “Is that what I think it is?”
“Well,” the hyena said as she handed him the clipboard. “If you sign here, you'll get to find out for yourself.” Clawhauser immediately took the clipboard and signed it. Afterwards, she handed him the box and he quickly, yet carefully, opened it.
“It IS!” He reached in and pulled out a bobble-head of Gazelle. “The limited edition Gazelle bobble-head of her in her first outfit from her first ever concert!” He squealed excitedly and placed it on the counter next to his name plate, then gently tabbed the head to make it wobble around.
The hyena tipped her hat. “Felidae Express is happy to have made your day.”
“Well,” said Nick. “At least someone around here is having a good day.”
Judy giggled at Clawhauser's excitement. She looked over to the hyena, who was writing something down on the clipboard, and something caught her attention. She noticed she had a keychain on her belt that had a metal green leaf with two uppercase “G” letters in lighter green colors. “Huh.” She stepped over to her and waved slightly. “Excuse me, ma'am?”
“Hmm?” The hyena turned to her. “Oh, call me Felicity.” She held out her hand to gesture a handshake. “Felicity Hyenendez.”
Judy reached out and shook her hand. “Pleased to meet you.” She then pointed at the keychain. “I was wondering; would that happen to be the logo of the Glade Guardians? The basketball home team of the city of Sylvan Glade?”
“Oh?” Felicity turned her hip and took hold of her keychain. “You noticed? That's right, I'm a big fan of the team. This was a souvenir from one of their championship games I went to with my family.”
“So you've been the city before?”
“Actually,” she said with an enthusiastic smile. “I was born in Sylvan Glade.” Judy's eyes widened a little. “I lived there with my parents for a long time, until we moved here to Zootopia.” She gently grabbed the logo of the delivery company on her shirt and pulled it outward a little. “Been working for Felidae Express ever since.”
“Hmm.” Judy tilted her head a little.
Felicity looked a little concerned. “Is something wrong?”
“Oh, no no.” Judy said waving her hands. “I was just curious. I heard about that team and that looked like their logo. It's great to meet a fan. Let alone someone who was born in the city they're based in.”
“Well,” Felicity said happily as she tipped her hat again. “Felidae Express is happy to have made your day.” She waved Judy goodbye and made her way to the exit.
Nick looked at Judy and could tell what she was thinking, so he said it out loud for her. “Think it's a coincidence that we met someone who comes from one of the cities involved in this new case?”
“Maybe.” Judy gestured him to follow her. “Come on. Chief Bogo's probably back in his office by now. Take care Clawhauser. Enjoy your new bobble-head.”
“Oh I will.” He tapped the head again to make it wobble around as he giggled playfully.
Outside Bogo's office, Nick reached up to grab the door handle. He stopped and looked at Judy. “Ready to start a new big case partner?”
Judy scoffed confidently. “Always.”
Nick then opened the door and inside, they both saw Miss Bengalton sitting in Bogo's chair. But what surprised them the most, was that they also saw Leodore Lionheart in the office too wearing civilian clothes. He was sitting in a chair to the right of the desk, with his back to the door. He turned around to meet their gaze with a stern expression.
Bengalton was the one to break the silence. “Ah. Miss Hopps. Mr. Wilde. Glad you two could finally make it. Please, have a seat.” She gestured her paw to the chair in front of the desk. “We have much to discuss.”
