Hookroots are a plant-like organism of many arid regions on Tellus. Although they resemble palms or broad-leaf desert trees, the visible trunk and crown represent only a small portion of the organism. Most of the hookroot’s body lies underground as an immense network of deep roots and rhizome-like structures that tap subterranean water reserves. This hidden system can spread widely beneath the sand, allowing individual surface trees to appear in otherwise barren desert landscapes.
The above-ground structure grows as a tall, flexible column topped by large leaves arranged in a crown. This palm-like form is a result of convergent evolution. It efficiently lifts the leaves above hot ground layers, withstands strong desert winds, and allows nutrients from the underground body to flow directly to the crown. The leaves provide limited photosynthesis, but also serve roles in heat regulation, moisture capture, and reproduction.
Because most biomass remains below ground, hookroots are highly resilient to drought and extreme heat. Surface trunks may die and reappear elsewhere as the subterranean organism expands, giving the impression that the trees slowly migrate across the desert. For travelers and wildlife, hookroots often mark places where deep moisture exists beneath the sand, making them important ecological anchors in otherwise sparse environments.
