AWWW YEAHHHHHH.
Got this sucker finished a few days ago before I dun got sick, Fuck summer colds.
It's designed to look like a traditional Maori fishhook
Depending on if the buyer wants it, I may or may not have a chord strung to it with a bone bead as the clasp.
The other side is finished too, but it's hard to polish a turd. Hell you can see on the face that the bone I was working with had some cosmetic issues, but since I'm learning and this was my first big project I was willing to deal with that fact and not toss it like that little critical voice in my head often tells me to,
I like to do this :3

Well it's one of the softer materials you could work with. I futilely attempted to carve some pretty stone with the same bits I used on bone only to find it won't carve at all. Those same bits carve bone like its warm butter.
I've been carving cow bone, tho I would imagine all bones to be about the same hardness. Or softness in this case.

The age of the bone don't seem to matter, tho I have been working with freashly dead cow bone.
I hear tell that the Maori people would use aged whale bone. Why it had to be aged I'm not sure but that's how they did it. May have something to do with letting all the skin and marrow be eatin up natural rather then boiling it to clean them.
Boiling bones tends to suck the fat into the bone and can tarnished the look and feel of it.

I'm a bit of a texturite, so I had to ask what it felt like, mostly because bone can look deceivingly smooth sometimes.
And this whole piece is just lovely! I adore the hook shape, especially with a nautical theme. Ever considered making a video of your working progress?
