Making home in Lake Superior, Theorbo is partly surrounded by the Laurentian Mixed Forest Province, otherwise called the Northwoods, especially while they hike around the Upper Peninsula and Northern regions of Wisconsin. This is an ecoregion characterized by broad scopes of mixed conifer and deciduous trees, a place where sometimes in the evening, when the temperature drops and water vapor condenses, organic compounds released by trees scatter light, creating a visible, low-hanging shroud. On today's hike, that is exactly what is happening.
Theorbo stops to admire the haze as it covers a glossy lake amidst the trees. On the ground, they notice many flat, smooth rocks, and get an idea. The last time they skipped rocks was years ago, yet if they were going to try their skills out again, there's no time like the present.
They stretch, grab a medium-sized stone between their left hand's thumb and their index finger, wind up, and throw. It's a dud. The dunking sound is loud enough to echo off the bodies of the surrounding trees. They find another comparable stone, and try again. They manage to get one skip in this time. Another throw, two skips. With their confidence building up, they take one final attempt. As Theorbo swings, they step into the throw with their right foot to gain more momentum at the point of their release, and then catch their balance by sprawling their right hand out off to the side. The rock skips, once.. twice.. three times! Sure, the world record is somewhere around 80, but those people have been doing it for years and years...
Satisfied enough with themselves, Theorbo takes another moment to take in the calming scene - the croaking of the frogs, the soft ripples expanding outward from the bounce points, and the golden light casting glowing reflections across the pond. They refill his water bottle with the freshwater, and hike off again to make it back to the campsite before dusk.
