My headcanon: Ryan won a contest to go to Africa (Nes thought he was crazy for even bothering to enter those), ended up in a jungle during a tour, got washed down river by mistake, and woke up with Karume poking him and looking him over. After helping Ryan recover, he got Ryan to grab on to him, and took Ryan back to where he knew civilization was. X)
