Wanted to whip up a rough to help figure out what direction I could take my floating island idea, and even for a basic inverted mountain with a plateau cap, it lokos pretty good so, I may just fiddle around with this template a bit, see how much I could improve on it, an then expand on this, enlarge it a bit to fit everything I've made earlier, hangars, blimps, cottages, and assemble it onto the floating island idea of mine.
Closing thoughts: Holy geez is Blender EASIER to work with, once you learn its habits. Hell it's even easier than even SketchUp, somethings I've been using for the past 15+ years or so, and I thought SKP was easy and fun. There are in built tools with blender that makes vertex (dot pushing) child's play, like a circle selector that like a brush in either GIMP, PhotoShop, Krita selects vertex, edges, whole faces so much quicker, and if you want, you can still single click on things the sketchup way but, why bother? This template "Rock" took me mere minutes to make, and the hole in the bottom side for a hidden blimp/balloon hangar would have meant a round about method in SketchUp of erasing the face of a quad which I want as the entrance, then draw out four lines with the pencil tool to make the recessed bit, then make a new face again with the pencil... Blender?... You just pick a face, hit ALT-E to manifold intrude, and bam... carved rock hangar for some blimps!
And yes yes, if not for the large-HUGE quality of life improvements done to Blender 4.5 and 5.0 with all these useful tools, I wouldn't quite view it as better than Sketchup.. but it IS and I'm hooked!!
Now to play around with a few more low detail floating rocks like this to help figure out what style to use with my final model! :D
