The sun began to set over Zootopia, as Judy just stood there in her open window looking out at the city. Her ears were droopy, her nose twitched slightly, and her foot was stamping rapidly. She let out a loud sigh and went over to her swivel chair to sit down. She turned on the TV and flipped through channels. One was about the weather, another about a game show, and the third one was about the upcoming wedding of Howler and Artemis. She stopped on that channel and listened to the animals talk about all that's to be expected of the upcoming event. She tapped the table she sat in front of and then reached over to grab her phone as she muted the TV. She scrolled through her contacts to find Nick's and dialed it.
At Nick's apartment, he was busy relaxing on his couch eating pizza while watching one of Finnrir Howler's action flicks on his own TV: “Impawsible Mission”. When he heard his phone vibrate and saw his contact poster of Judy, he muted the TV and grabbed the phone to answer. “Hey there Carrots, what's up?”
“Nick,” she said with concern in her tone, “I can't do it. Waiting to take on this case till tomorrow is driving me crazy. We should investigate a little, see if we find out anything Miss Bengalton or the BMI might have missed.”
“Settle down there Hopps.” Nick set his slice of Pizza down and sat up. “You heard what she and the Chief said. They wanted to give us the lowdown on this first, and get us on board to help out. Any other questions we had for Bengalton, we could ask her tomorrow once she gets all the BMI agents she needs to help with the investigation. Didn't going about our regular day on patrol help calm your nerves?”
“Only a little, because that's all we took care of today. LITTLE things. This is BIG Nick. Probably bigger than the Night Howler incident.”
“I concur.” Nick said as she smirked. “But sometimes slow and steady wins the race Carrots. Be the tortoise, not the hare.” He chuckled playfully.
“Har-har.” Judy smiled as she rolled her eyes.
“Just take it easy tonight, like I am.” He grabbed his pizza slice and took a bite. “Order a pizza. Watch a good movie. We'll be back on the case tomorrow before you know it.”
Judy looked back out towards the city. She sighed and leaned back in her chair. “I'll try. See you tomorrow.”
“Good night Carrots.”
“Goodnight.” She hung up first and set her phone down on the table. She sat there for a few seconds pondering to herself. She looked back at the muted TV and saw Cervina talking to a reporter. Just then, she remembered one of the topics that they didn't fully discuss, that Purrtricia promised to tell her and Nick about in full detail tomorrow. “Targets interspecies couples.” She reached into the drawer of the table and pulled out the pamphlet Bogo had given her yesterday. “Finnrir Howler and Cervina Artemis. A timber wolf and piebald deer soon to be married.” She looked out the window. “Next target is likely Zootopia.”
She looked at the pamphlet again and expressed pure determination. She stood up and grabbed the keys to her meter maid cart. “Sorry Nick. But I gotta look into something real quick to stop this nervous twitch before it drives me crazy.”
As night finally fell on the city, Judy had driven all the way to the outskirts of Zootopia where the prison was located. Using her credentials as a ZPD officer, she was able to enter and ask for a visitation for a certain prisoner. The rhino officer she met at the front entrance lead her through to the visitation center. “Normally we don't allow such late visiting hours, but we can make an exception for you Officer Hopps.”
“I appreciate it.” Once they entered the center, Judy sat down at closest seat and waited. “This is gonna be weird.” She saw the door on the other side that lead to the cells open. At first, she could only see the rhino officer standing in the doorway. As if an invisible prisoner walked through the door.
Judy looked curiously to see if the one she came to visit was really going to come and talk to her. Once she saw a poof of wool rise up from behind the counter on the other side, the seat there raised up slowly to reveal Dawn Bellwether, sporting a sinister stare. She reached over and grabbed the phone while keeping her eyes on Judy, who reached for her own phone while keeping a stern look. “Hello...JUDY.”
“Hello Dawn.”
“So,” Bellwether said with a sarcastic tone. “To what do I owe the pleasure of speaking to the bunny who thwarted my plans to rule the city and got me thrown in jail?”
“Look Dawn,” Judy said calmly. “I'm not here to open old wounds. For either of us.”
Bellwether looked bored now as she twiddled her fingers and looked at them. “Then why are you here? Surely it doesn't have something to do with the Bureau of Mammal Investigations, now does it?” Judy reacted slightly. “Oh don't act surprised. The moment that white tiger came to talk to me, I knew it wouldn't be long before you yourself showed up next.”
Judy scoffed a little. “Alright. So, you know what brought me here. But do you know what I came to talk to you about?”
“Perhaps.” She adjusted her glasses. “Probably not the same stuff Bengalton wanted to talk about, because she no doubt already told you.”
“Do you know what this Anonymous individual is planning for Zootopia?” Judy got straight to the point.
“Oh. THEM.” Bellwether's expression became more focused and a little more stern. “I'll tell you the same thing I told Bengalton; I. Don't. Know.”
“They contacted you, gave you the formula for the Night Howler serum, and let you turn an entire city against itself with savage predators.” Judy leaned in closer towards the window. “There's no way they would just simply give you, of all animals, something that if you weren't close to them. They'd have to have known the kind of sheep you are personally to want to work with you.”
Bellwether just sat there, unfazed by Judy's words. “Sorry to disappoint you Hopps. But I never once met them in person. They made it clear that they wanted to keep their identity a secret, because they only ever contacted me through untraceable means. Like letters with no return addresses or identifiable handwriting. All I know, is what they gave me. A means to turn this city against itself by forcing prey to fear predators, by turning them savage.”
Judy contemplated for a moment. Unable to grasp at how Anonymous actually knew Bellwether. “So they just happened to know who you were? As well as knowing what it was you sought, that they even made the Night Howler serum for you to achieve it?”
“Hey,” she said with a still unfazed look on her face. “I don't know HOW they knew me, let alone that I wanted to run a city with predator fearing prey as the majority of the populace. Anyone I knew who was in on that, are all in jail with me. If it was someone else, then it was some animal who spied on me and listened in to my private conversations.”
Judy again thought to herself and recollected all those who aided Bellwether in her scheme. All of which were rams and no other species of animal. There's no way either of them could be Anonymous, given their particular animal features. “They didn't tell you if they were planning something else, or bigger?” She wanted to ask her about the interspecies victims, but had to see Bellwether's genuine reaction to know if she was aware of that or not.
“Your guess is as good as mine.” She sat back in her chair and looked bored again. “Like I said, all I know is what they gave me. Don't know what they look like, what they sound like, or what kind of animal they are. The last thing they told me was that if I was ever caught, to expect the BMI to come and ask me questions.” She gripped the phone tightly out of frustration. “Almost as if they knew I'd fail and had that little contingency in place. Whatever it is they're up to right now that has them all riled up?It must be pretty bad.”
As Judy once again thought to herself, the rhino officer walked over and stood next to Bellwether. He grabbed the phone and spoke to Judy. “Visiting session is over Officer Hopps. I got to take Miss Bellwether back to her cell.”
Judy gave him a nod to show she understood. Before she was taken away, she spoke to Judy one last time. “I'd be careful with this one if I were you Hopps. Wouldn't want to end up dead before I get a chance at revenge.” She chuckled softly but menacingly, showing that she was keeping this side of her bottled up until the last minute to intimidate Judy. Fortunately, like how Judy's words unfazed Bellwether, her little villainous gesture didn't faze her at all. The last thing she'd ever let happen, was allowing Dawn Bellwether to have her revenge.
Once outside, Judy made her way back to her meter maid cart. She sat down and started it up and again pondered to herself. “She really doesn't know who Anonymous is. Or about the interspecies thing.” There was one other thought that was bothering her. “Also, did Anonymous create the Night Howler serum because they knew what Dawn was after and wanted to help? Or were they already planning on turning predators and prey against each other and just needed someone to pull it off for them?” She buckled up and drove away from the prison. “You're over-thinking again Hopps. You'll get your answers eventually. Right now though? I think I'll just relax for the rest of the night, now that my nervous twitch has stopped.”
