Personal theory that I've had for a long time now is that Gaia and Syndel "disappeared" because they went off to make a True Neutral race together and just never came back. (maybe they saw how their older kids were getting along (mutual genocide stemmed only by the fact that they live in different planes of existence, and even that wasn't enough in the long run) and figured that they'd react very poorly to their new spiritual siblings)
This isn't to explain to the audience the concept of divorce- but explain to the audience the characters' perceptions and interpretations of divorce, marriage, and their worldview. The very nature of the fact that Kieri sees divorce as not only an alien concept but sacrilegious is indicative of the culture she was raised in. Also informs the reader of Rhea's perception of Gaia's and Syndel's relationship was a possibly closer partnership or intimate relationship from the previous page.
