I think Game Freak has figured out that, while it's customary to freak out and scream that the new starters suck and blah blah blah (seriously, I'm old enough to remember when people were screaming that they hated Umbreon's design), there's a lot less of it if at least one of them looks like a fluffy traditional pet.
Last time, it was Sprigatito. Before then, it was Scorbunny. And before then, it was Litten. Now it's Pombon. Maybe next time the water-types will get a shot at it.
Me personally... I honestly don't know which one I'd go with. Much as I adored Sprigatito, I ultimately ended up going with Fuecoco because I thought it looked like it was designed in reverse; that, while Sprigatito and Quaxly were designed first and had evolved forms designed later, Fuecoco looked to me like someone designed the final form first and then designed what a starter version of that would be. And my instinct turned out to be correct: Skeldirge was a bad-ass flaming ghost croc while the other two went anthro.
Why do I mention that? Because I've got that same vibe from all three of the starters. They all look like somebody made a kick-ass final form, then asked "Now what would this look like as a baby?" And I will be very disappointed if Pombon doesn't evolve into a big-ass lion with a flaming mane.
