Abby Clapton's best friend Sam Rhys comes from a particularly wealthy and sophisticated family with roots in the Valleys of South Wales. The Rhyses themselves hail from a village near the River Gwendraeth, but they relocated to this particular part of Canada when Sam was still quite small. While they do conduct most conversations in English, the Rhyses are not above reverting to their native Welsh to talk amongst themselves.
Needless to say, this can be pretty confusing for outsiders - especially someone like Abby, who knows a bit of the language herself, but not enough to keep up with the often-animated conversations between Sam and her parents. Such as here, when Sam's mother Myfanwy interrupts a sleepover to chastise her daughter for a rare moment of slovenly housekeeping.
And just on the off-chance you actually want to know what they're saying, the Rhys' dialogue roughly translates as follows:
"Samantha! Is this your bikini top I've just found dumped out on the landing?"
"No, mother, it's a double-barrelled catapult - of course it's my bloody bikini top!"
