best way is to just Look around on the net for Tutorials of stuff you want to learn - there are always plenty of people willing to share information
good ones to learn are Reaction Controllers, Displacment Mapping and Muscle Bones - makes alot of stuff heaps easier.

Since I am using LightWave, I am learning from Timothy Albee's book Essential Lightwave 8. It's easy to follow and designed for the novice learning the tool from the ground up. The actual manual that came with the tool is HUGE.
I know a little about 3D Studio MAX 6 enough to be dangerous. The posing dials and key framing are similar to Poser's. If I find I just can't wrap my head around LightWave I may switch to 3D Max or Miya.
