Hailing from the Black Citadel, Grammalt Songtooth is a proud member of the Tooth Warband—a traveling band of Charr who have devoted their lives not to war but to spreading the arts of song, poetry, and music across Tyria.
Raised in a Blood Legion fahrar, it was as a young man that Grammalt found his purpose not on the frontlines but as a war drummer, motivating his fellow Charr with rhythm and song! It was there that he met other young Charr who believed in the power of music over blades and guns, and together they formed the Tooth Warband. They poured their hearts into song, not war, and once they had come of age, the troupe traveled far and wide, learning all manner of instruments, poetry, and songs. They sang in inns and taverns, regaling the people with tales of heroism, love, and pleasure, before collecting their earnings and moving on to the next city in need of their sultry tones and deep baritone voices.
The Tooth Warband traveled together for many years, but after Scarlet's attack on Lion's Arch, the devastation of the dragon cycle, and the return of Balthazar, Tyria needed them now more than ever, and so, the Tooth Warband split their forces, sending their talents to every corner of Tyria to uplift the people and keep their spirits high. Grammalt, eager to see new lands, secured passage to Elona, where the commander of Dragon's Watch was currently battling with the warmongering human god, Balthazar.
When Grammalt arrived, he took in the sights of Elona before learning of the people's plight and the horrors that Balthazar had inflicted upon them. Believing they had suffered enough, Grammalt began his campaign across Elona, singing and entertaining the people. Song by song, he soothed the hearts and minds of Elona, uniting them as a people once more until the day came when word spread of the commander's victory and the end of Balthazar. The people were free, and Grammalt's duty was done, and yet he could not bring himself to leave yet. He had come to love Elona and its people, and so he stayed, continuing to sing for them.
One day, while traveling the war-torn roads between towns, Grammalt had fallen victim to quicksand. He thrashed and fought to free himself, but despite his best efforts, he was unable to escape and was pulled under. But where he thought he would suffocate and meet his end, he was instead dropped into an ancient ruin filling with sand. Though alive, his situation was no better as he searched high and low, seeking an exit but finding nothing. Grammalt was stuck, his lute was broken, and his only solace was a small crack far above him where light poured into the ruins, illuminating the cave. He would not run out of air, but he would starve. He waited, day after day, for someone to come looking, but he knew that no one would find him. After days without food, he clutched at his stomach as it churned in pain, holding himself up against the wall when the stone pushed in, revealing a secret passage. Grammalt finally saw hope once again! But, as he reached the end of the passage, he entered a small room, only to find an old lute. Grammalt could only laugh as he held the lute in his arms, spotting the name "Testudo Epularum" etched on its neck.
Hopeless, he staggered back into the vast ruins and started to play, watching the growing mound of sand that threatened to bury him if hunger didn't claim him first. As he strummed the lute, he sang his heart out, waiting for the end, until a voice cried out to him. A merchant! A passing merchant had heard him singing! The man fed a rope through the hole to save him, and Grammalt mustered all his strength and climbed, escaping to see the light of day once more. As he thanked the merchant for saving his life, the man offered him a meal from his wares free of charge for the song, and Grammalt feasted, satisfying days' worth of hunger in minutes before collapsing from exhaustion.
He woke in the carriage some time later, straddling the lute as the merchant carried him to town. The people welcomed him with open arms and nursed him back to health as thanks for the songs he played for them during the war, and in time he was back on his feet, singing for everyone once more. As he sang and played his music, the people paid not only in gold but also in food, and he feasted like a king as the crowds grew bigger and bigger with each town he played in. Grammalt Songtooth! The Charr troubadour! Wherever he played his lute, feasts and revelry followed!
Grammalt feasted and feasted, growing fatter and hungrier. His songs became more enchanting as he grew fat, inviting more people and food! Elona bore witness to the Charr's expanding waistline as his clothes tore, the seams popped, and he needed tailor after tailor to fix his clothes. Towns knew of his impending arrival as his heavy footfalls shook the sand and his huffs of exhaustion carried with the wind. They eagerly anticipated his performance and prepared their feasts for him in advance. Seeing how much they appreciated him, he would sing his heart out for them before graciously accepting their feasts. Thus did the story, and weight, of Gramalt Songtooth grow!
Soon, Grammalt would receive a letter, and the time had come for him to return to Tyria and reunite with his warband to exchange tales of heroism and bravery! The people of Elona bid farewell to the Charr, watching the ship lurch as he boarded. Grammalt turned and rested his belly on the rails of the ship, giving it a hefty jiggle as he thanked the people for everything.
The ship soon set out to sea toward Lion's Arch, and as the crew worked the decks, the obese charr serenaded them with songs of fair maidens and buried treasure. His soothing voice, boisterous laugh, and calming melodies kept the men in high spirits, and as thanks for his performance on the open seas, the crew fed him entire crates of food that he happily emptied. As they sailed onward, Grammalt continued to sing for them, and the men watched as the fattest charr they had ever met seemed to grow fatter before their very eyes as he ate barrel after barrel of their provisions.
When the ship docked in Lion's Arch and Grammalt disembarked, the Tooth Warband could not believe their eyes as their brother stepped off the ship thousands of pounds fatter than when they last saw him. He lumbered toward them, arms thrown wide as every footfall shook the ground beneath them before he swept them all into a crushing group hug. The Tooth Warband began to grope their brother's flab, astonished by his transformation, and he welcomed their curiosity until his stomach growled for food. They led him to the nearest inn and watched Grammalt's flab jiggle and bounce with every step before they had to squeeze him through the doorway. After ordering a feast for Grammalt, they listened intently as he regaled them with his journey of unity and his newfound love of Elona. They heard of his harrowing near-death experience and the way the people came together to support him. All the while, he demonstrated his unstoppable appetite, clearing the table again and again until not a morsel remained.
Though he had grown quite fat, his warband was just glad to see him alive and well, and together they stepped up to the stage to begin the first performance by the full Tooth warband in many seasons. As they strummed their instruments and sang, the people of Lion's Arch too were charmed by the enchanting melodies of the Testudo Epularum, just like the people of Elona.
Before long, the other members of the Tooth Warband were looking quite fat themselves, led by none other than Grammalt Songtooth! The Charr troubadour!
