Lemon and Raspberry

The gloomy morning was quiet, crisp and cool. There were droplets still clinging to the foliage from rain earlier that morning and a thick blanket of fog was rolling in. Spring time in Washington was often known for its general dampness but Raspberry didn't mind. Lemon, on the other hand, would have preferred to stay in bed if it weren’t for the dogs and chickens in need of care.
"Wait," Raspberry protested , grabbing Lemon’s arm as she rose unwillingly from the nest of blankets. "Please..."
Lemon sighed dropping back into the bed and rolling toward Raspberry's pleading eyes. Lemon hesitated a moment, looking at her beautiful mate. The way the soft, speckled feathers of her throat were shining in the dim morning light, how perfectly her beak curved, and how the stars couldn't match the spark she got in her eyes when she looked at Lemon.
"What is it..? Do I have something on my face?" Raspberry demanded, a hand raising to her face.
"Oh, no! I was just admiring you..." Lemon responded soothingly.
Lemon's beak slightly open she moved forward, gently kissing Raspberry.
"Okay now, I've got to go do some chores." Lemon attempted to rise again, only to be pulled back down.
Raspberry moved her hands to the sides of Lemon's face and pulled it toward her, kissing her again, slowly this time and full of passion. Lemon couldn't go now, and she knew it. Raspberry's roaming hands brushed past her neck and crept down to her lower back.
"Please, baby? Chores won't take too long," Lemon murmured.
Raspberry sighed and let Lemon go, but not before she managed one last peck on the cheek.
"I'll make breakfast then, while you're doing that."
Lemon smiled gratefully at her mate and sat up in the bed. She rubbed her eyes as she felt her way into some slippers. Raspberry got up, making her way toward the kitchen. Lemon paused to watch her walk away for obvious reasons.
Lemon stood and made her way down the hallway to where Raspberry was already pulling things out for breakfast, through the nearly empty living room, and out the front door.
She crossed the yard to open the chicken coop. It needed cleaned again. She assured herself she would do that later today.
The geese greeted her with happy honks while the ducks and chickens waited more quietly by the small door, ruffling their feathers excitedly. She opened the smaller door, releasing her legion of cheerful, squawking pets into the yard.
Lemon left them to their wandering to retrieve a bag of feed from a shed beside the coop. She moved to the center of the bird cluster, feeling them swarm around her feet, knowing that breakfast was soon to be had. Lemon began tossing the grains in different directions, watching her flocks follow the trajectory of their meal. More dignified than the chickens, some ducks and geese were taking their morning bath in the small pond.
Lemon, done with bird chores for the moment, went back inside to let the dogs out into the backyard. Already feeling a little tired, she finally sat down on the small futon in the living room, waiting for her lovely mate to finish breakfast.
A moment later, Raspberry was sitting next to her, gently rubbing her back.
"Hey, wake up. Breakfast is ready."
Lemon rubbed her eyes and stretched, wondering how much time had passed.
"If you don't get up I'll carry you into the kitchen." Raspberry threatened playfully.
