Personality: The current head of the army of Vermilia is loyalty personified: staunch supporter of Heinrick Friedlinde, the past king of the Kingdom of Struudal, Valan is a person that considers vows and promises as sacred. If he makes an oath, he will NEVER break it, ready to bring what he sworn to do in his tomb rather than betray the faith given to him... even if that puts him in dire situations.
His last vow to his lord, on the deathbed of King Heinrick, was to protect his family, meaning both the young princess Lumi, and the Crimson Queen, now head of the kingdom; and such an oath meant that he would save the two even from each other, if they ever tried to cause harm one another.
Because of that, when the Crimson Queen accused Snow White of treason, making her a wanted criminal in the kingdom, Valan helped the young lady to escape, and did it once again when the Big Bad Wolf caught princess Lumi, taking her back to the Queen.
He never let someone know he did such a thing, to not face the hatred of someone he vowed to help and protect, but because of his promise he couldn't let the monarch to hurt the young girl, and so he did everything he could to save her, and not make her face an horrible destiny.
Other than the value he gives to loyalty, Valan is quite the stoic person: someone who acts in a bit of a gruff way, not being quite the talkative person, and instead preferring a practical approach to everything he does. A person who goes for efficiency and precision, to get the most value of what he needs to do, without wasting strenght or time; someone who, by the Crimson Queen, is seen only as a war machine, the perfect general to lead her troops in battle and nothing more. But well, that's only a side of him.
With princess Lumi, a softer side can be shown by Valan: having been a friend, more than a servant, for her father, he always saw her like a niece, and acted quite as an ucle with Lumi; with the young lady his mask of gruffness melts, making him more sweet and talkative, encouraging her in doing what her heart desires, and protecting her like if she was a member of his family.
If he loves her in such a way, on the opposite he deeply hates a person in particular: Hector Von Lupin, the Big Bad Wolf. Not only he took back the princess to the Crimson Queen, putting Lumi in danger once again, but he treated the young lady as trash, chasing her like a hunter would do with a deer in the forest, and, even worse, the wolf devoured her to take her back; he acted as she was nothing more than a piece of meat that he could eat, with the risk of digesting and killing her, and such a behaviour cannot be condoned by the general.
He personally finds the Big Bad Wolf as a disgusting and vile person, who, if he ever had the chance, would love to execute for the crimes he commited.

Abilities: Valan is an incredibly strong person, able to eradicate trees with his bare hands, thanks to intensive trainings he took during all of his life... all in a way to compensate his total lack of mana.
He cannot physically perform magic, not being gifted with the basic energy to do so, but, to put his opponent on the same level as himself, he uses a particular weapon: his axe. Extremely skilled with it, in combat he uses said axe as a countermeasure for magic users: forged in a mix of iron and magical gemstones of the Land of Mineria, the blade of such a weapon is able to negate magic, capable of cutting trough it like butter, and so making it useless against Valan.
The perfect counter to face demons, if ever one decided to challenge the head of the army of Vermilia.
