This is a full shaded render of the next character in the series. an Arctic geared Malamute named Snowcrash (Neal Stephenson kicks ass by the way)
even though the finished product will be rendered as cell shaded, I still modelled it as if it were going to be full shading. I figure the results will be better.
Hes still WIP, so Ill be adding more gear and more detail to the clothing as I go.
If you wanna check out some of the cell shaded tests, check out my Scrap section.
Edit: Ive updated this to the 'final' version. Thats probably not gonna stick, knowing me, But Ive got all the gear I wanted to model done. the only thing that will change from here on are the folds in the cloth.

Hoo, I like this much more than the cell-shading-ones :) GI always looks mighty fine to my eye... What program do you use?
Personally I've done a few little models with Blender but the texturing and materials always suck way too bad. Also getting the desired look with textures and material takes f:ing forever because I have to render the model and see what it looks like, finetune it a bit, render again etc etc
Do you have any tips about how I could speed things up a bit? :)

Well, If you were using Blender, that was your first mistake. Blender is a good program for people who just want to make very low detail models for games or what not. Not that its impossible to get good results with blender, It would just take *alot* of unneccisary effort just to get around the lack of tools.
This model was created with Maya 7, and rendered with Mental Ray standalone (rendered on a different machine then it was modelled on).
My first suggestion would be to get a higher end modelling package like Maya or Softimage XSI. 3ds works too but it lacks some of the functionality of those two. Im not a fan of XSI but its a bit less confusing then Maya at first. You will likely see an improvement as soon as you learn the basic controls.
