As much as Kvarc tends to be a sweet bean when not working, on militia duty he's a bit of a different beast.
Kvarc pushes the idea of unit autonomy a lot further than what the Security Council had in mind. But hey, it works!
In the same vein he'll let you do much more as long as the outcome meets his forever high expectations.
Idk where best to start posting my worldbuilding stuff, so I might start here maybe.
I've been worldbuilding Varklar, a wolf-world without a state for over a year now I think.
LOOOOOOOOOORE:
After the first-contact crisis, the very local and small militia system of Varklar has expanded considerably into a strong galactic force.
While militia service is obviously voluntary, membership is quite common, around 1 in 5, or half of adult population.
Of course, not all are active all the time.
Depicted on the image is Kvarc, a Commandant (US: Lieutenant Colonel) in the Infantry Corps.
A Commandant is usually commanding a regiment (around 800 men of single corps), second-in-command of a brigade (4000 men of many corps), or a staff position.
This uniform is the everyday wear of soldiers unless they're in the field, or working on something messy.
Unlike a typical military, Amaranth Guard isn't split into a handful of branches like the US Army, Navy, Airforce etc.
It is split into 20 Corps in charge of a particular aspect of warfare and its sustainment/management.
A soldier's corps is depicted by the colour of the brim of his armband, shoulder and collar pads.
Infantry, as the primary and largest of all the corps, has no special colour or brim.
Notable elements:
- Rank armband: As Varklar never really had a standing army and instead relied on part-time militias, armbands were used as a quick way to show your rank without the need to change into a full uniform. Even the militias confederated into the Amaranth Guard and their officer corps expanded, that part stayed.
- Personal weapons: While soldiers do get access to weapons, it is very common for them to bring their own. Varklarians are near universally armed, their weapons are seen as extensions of themselves. As such, deeply personal weapons like a sword and a handgun will be most often brought into the Guard by the solider, and even the ones issued to them will likely get personalized.
- Fabric belt: Similarly to weapons, this is an article of clothing brought in by the soldier. It is used as the spot to hang up awards and accreditations, military and civilian. The pattern, make, thickness, material, etc. mean different things and are thus very unique.
