*THERE IS A STORY BELOW THE DESCRIPTION, A SEQUEL TO THIS ONE*
A surprise from HornedRam, a project he had in mind after drawing Sonique.
Gotta love Shadow, the edgy though rather entertaining figure hailing from Sonic Adventure 2. He's a nice foil to the more heroic Sonic and has a neat design. So when I started this sorta alternate take on the Sonic cast with genderbent version in the Arabian Nights, it just felt like a good idea to do Shadow one way or another. HornedRam thought so too and delivered on that front.
But who is she exactly? Read on and find out!

BLACK AS THE NIGHT
“Those merchants and travelers were easy picking!”
Fang and her gang certainly had taken the right decision by getting away from Surge and the 40 thieves. Barke and Beanie had followed her, thinking that not having to split the loot so unevenly would lead to riches and they had been proven right. When one did not need to give 50% to Surge and Kitty before splitting the other half between 38 of them...well, it was far, far more lucrative.
“Showed them right that to use our oasis and our road...well you gotta pay,” Barke stated, looking at the urns, crates and baskets full of goods. Jewelry, dried meat, salted fish...lots to enjoy as she returned to the oasis, sitting beneath a tree as the polar bear did not quite take to the desert heat, nor would she ever.
“Yeah, I bet absolutely nothing bad will happen to us a few paragraphs later!” Beanie added, going for Turkish delights as she took a whole mouthful of those tasty treats. As eccentric and perhaps out-of-touch with reality as she was, the explosive spellcaster was a true boon to the team if only because it was quite easier to intimidate passerby's with deflagrations than without.
“Sometimes...scratch that, most of the time I have no clue what you're even talking about, Beanie,” Fang said as the weasel counted the gems and jewel from the many pouches they found, already planning to wear a few and sell the rest through her contact in the underground market, Clutchina. Things were going well, better than they were ever since Surge fell head for heels over this Sonique chick...bad move for a thief to suddenly grow a conscience and a heart. “Anyway, think we can lay low and rest easy for a while.”
The trio had indeed been rather successful as they lounged about, eating and relaxing within their oasis home, a small hut beneath the ground serving as their base of operation. Yet currently they felt the need to expand a little, maybe recruit one or two more members to their band. The point was to not go overboard and make the same mistakes as Surge and Kitty, else they'd gain less dividends and disruption to the harmony and cohesion of their group would make them crash and burn.
“Uh...Fang? There's a cloud of dust and sand towards the horizon,” Barke noticed, getting up to look ahead in a better position.
“Well yeah, of course dummy. We're in the desert, sandstorms and gusts of wind are to be expected,” Fang replied, adjusting her hat to block out the sun, lounging on her back to catch a quick nap.
“It's getting much closer...and towards our position?” Barke said, hesitant about the last part and yet Fang got up to verify, only to verify such claims. “Didn't you say this was far removed from Sonique's usual territory?”
“Crap...I thought she was just a legend...” Fang said, looking through the scope of her elaborate crossbow. A dark figure seemed to float above the sand and dunes, skating with magic slippers and it looked angry...very much so. “This is the Black Night...”
“The what now?” Barke asked, in the dark as to who this figure was and what this was supposed to be.
“There used to be a Sultanate here, long ago...their last ruler, Jarald, had a grandaughter to take care of, one called Maria. After the demise of his child, he doted on her and tried to ensure her safety...thus he created something using powerful magic,” Fang began to explain as she followed the figure getting closer. Taking position in her sniper spot, she made gestures for her two partners to prepare as well, if only to not be taken by surprise. “Genie magic encased in a homunculi of some sort...the ultimate guardian, a companion and protector to Maria. The child and defender proved to be fast and great friends, though a catastrophe struck down the Sultanate. In her last moments did Maria demand for her guardian and close friend to extend her protection to all in the desert...thing is, that place was destroyed about two hundred years ago.”
“Woah, great exposition dump, Fang!” Beanie replied as she went on top of a tree, getting a better vantage point as she prepared her spells, explosive orbs at the ready to be launched at any time. “Really gonna help the readers.”
“Could you just focus for two seconds?!” Fang snapped back before herself doing exactly what she demanded of her feathered friend. It was as if she lived in another world and it irked her, though Beanie's expertise in blowing things up more than made up for that quirk. “It's getting closer...why don't you show that thing a warm welcome?”
“On it!” Beanie responded as she launched a multitude of her spells, trying to hit the point of origin of that trail. Right in front, though it dodged and zagged as this eliminated the hypothesis that this was but a peculiar yet natural phenomenon. “Dang, it's fast, it's like I can only hit its shadow...get it? Because it's actually-”
“Gosh darn it girl, head in the game!” Barke added, herself more the muscle as if this Black Night got close, then she'd be up. Stretches, mental preparation as Fang took careful aim. “Got a lock on her?”
“Yeah...Beanie, spread!” Fang went on to shout at her companion, a maneuver they had done a few times in the past. It was supposed to be an anti-Sonique combo, though it was just as efficient on slower targets. Beanie used all of her orbs in one fell swoop, leaving just one tiny spot unattended...which was exactly where Fang would shoot. “Gotcha, you stupid myth...”
The bolt was launched, going fast and yet before it could even hit the dark figure was one thing heard.
“Djinn Control!”
And then did the figure teleport ahead at speed beyond measure, a spell which then made the woman appear before them all. Black and red of quills, pillowy pantaloons, magic golden slippers which made her float above ground, she had a sheathed saber in one hand as her ebony fur, complete with some white tuft, was completely pristine and flawless despite the dust and dirt she threw around. Lean, skin and fur exposed as if it was both appealing but also a dare to try and harm her, she went on to look at the trio with a gaze that spoke volumes about her disdain.
“We can make this easy...or we can make this hard. Your choice,” the Black Night went on to offer, pure confidence and intimidation in her voice as she meant business.
“Oh, I'm sure you make some people ha-” Beanie began to say before the black hedgehog woman teleported and kicked her, launching the feathered thief some impressive distance. “I should have seen this comiiiiiiiiiiing...”
Barke was up as she rushed towards their opponent, climbing the tree with surprising ease and speed as she lunged at the Black Night. A tight embrace, a bear hug as she tried to crush this enemy of theirs right here and there. No speed or magic would really help someone with broken bones and after that'd be done they'd go back for Beanie.
“Tch,” was all that the ebony hedgehog had to say as she spun around and then brought two fingers together. “Djinn Snap!”
It was as if Barke's understanding of time had slowed down as her muscles, her reflexes were dim. Her target merely slipped in as Fang's own projectile headed towards her was caught with one hand. A surprise attack that would have dealt with more mundane opponents, yet the Black Night as it turned out was not ordinary, not even close. Before time and momentum got back to their rightful state, Barke was tackled by the hedgehog spinning into a ball, launching herself at full velocity, which resulted in the polar bear going the same way as Beanie.
“You know what, screw this,” Fang said, putting her crossbow down and getting on her knees. “You made your point, you're obviously real, you're stronger. I surrender to you, Black Night.”
“Smart...” the hedgehog said as she descended upon the ground, dropping the crossbow bolt to the ground. Still did she not touch the ground, still did not sand or anything seemed to blemish her entire being as she looked down on Fang, both proverbially and literally. “Though perhaps not so much.”
She had seen the knife coming, blocking Fang's wrist as she twisted and crushed it. Not enough to snap it in two, but more so to hurt and stop a foolish initiative. A groan of pain, an embarrassing display as Fang yelped and tried to break free. She couldn't.
“Black Night is but a title, one I do not appreciate, though it does come in handy in putting the fear in bandits and scums like you,” she said as she then released that wrist once the knife was let go of. “I am Shadow, the ultimate protector of the desert and dunes. You are a nuisance, preying on the weak and leaving them destitute. Change your ways or next time...next time I won't be so kind.”
Then before she knew it did Fang see that she was gone. This had been a close one, a sound defeat as perhaps they needed to expand and fast. Getting a more versatile and numerous amount of skills would be paramount if they were to defend themselves. First getting back to Beanie and Barke, then recruiting...and then switching spot.
If only to never meet Shadow, the Black Night, ever again.
