This is a concept design for a friend's modeling project. He's working on a freelance 30in gauge railroad set in Gerogia. Via Email he gave me a "history" of the D&R.
Engine #1, if I recall correctly, is a 2-4-0 built in 1874. I forget who he said the builder was, but I took a lot of inspiration from the Union Iron Works and Virginia & Truckee #1, the "Lyon".
The only thing is I think I went a little too far back in terms of building practice however. The locomotive is more 1860s than 1870s in design, or at least that's my perception.
Anyway, he didn't ask me to draw this, I volenteered, and frankly I LOVE how it turned out!
Well I hope my friend likes is and I hope you all do as well! I really put some effort into this one and it took me a while to complete. Although I appologize for the poor scanner quality. I was at a friend's house and used his, but it's decent enough though.

That was my first thought upon seeing this image. I figured it'd make a dandy live steam model, as it would be big enough to fit a variety of gauges and still be powerful enough to haul the engineer and some cars about. Is the blue part of the boiler painted blue, or is it representing a light, polished metal surface such as stainless steel? Either finish would be attractive. Great job on the lettering too. The name you picked made me smile.
The boiler was colored in order to represent "Russian Iron". Although in reality it was more of a "Gun Metal" color, but had a blue-ish tint from reflecting the sky above. (the true color of which is a long heated debate with railroad historians)
As for the name it wasn't my choice, it was that of my friend's. It's his railroad after all!! Don't you know of the Two Golden Rules of model railroading!?

Oh! So it's based on the Colorado & Southern Cooke built moguls!!

Though is that what you loco looks like? Or are there some differences?

Actually the whistle is single chime round top.
Granted this is a flat top single chime, and the sound quality isn't that great, but here's an example of a single chime whistle.

I actually wanted a 5 or 6 Chime on my Trainsona, but my sis,
LovingAngel who's doing the request, said that 4-6 Chime whistles need a lot of steam, so to speak, my Trainsona has those small 4-4-0 drive wheels, like Edward, so it wouldn't need much steam, so I had to go through 3 Chimes.
