They're one of those Frog & Toad/Ernie & Bert situations where they act EXACTLY how a couple acts, but the creator didn't name their sexualities super decisively so a legion of weird heterosexual uncles who related to them as a model of friendship are perpetually spiralling about it online. Also the games are fun!

Personally I always saw Bert and Ernie as brothers rather than lovers. I'd say I was too innocent but I also shipped Tigger and Rabbit from Winnie-The-Pooh so it's anyone's guess at that point.
