I mean, I'm speaking in waveform shapes here. You're using square waves for this, by the sound of it. Probably a low duty cycle, but with the echo and unless I plug this shit into a waveform analyzer [that is to say, Audacity] and squint, I can't say for certain.
Triangle and Sawtooth are two of the other basic waveforms, along with stuff like sine and noise channels. Common stuff in chiptune music, both on actual retro systems and with modern-day compositions. We didn't really start having commonplace sequenced/FM synthesizer/PCM music until it was the 90s. A bit earlier than that for PC markets, but I digress.
