One thing I love about the series is its depiction of Inspector Kumano. He's the comic relief of the series, along with Daisuke Horii, but he's not a bumbling buffoon that makes you wonder how he got the job in the first place. Sure, he makes mistakes and is the butt of jokes, but he's also competent at his job and can even hold his own against Iron Alliance foot soldiers.
Well aside from the giant robot action of course. Which reminds me, another thing I appreciate this series is its depiction of the monster robots, in that how they move and are depicted. Unlike other Toku series that have a "giant monster of the week" which is basically just a guy in a rubber monster suit, INCLUDING the robots, Red Baron seems to go out of its way to depict the robots as ACTUAL robots in design and execution(some are intricately designed puppets), and how the suit actors depict them. Hell, Red Baron himself differs in that his movements are more choppy, and has different "hands"(the hands differ each scene, one is either a closed fist or an open-chop, like the kind you'd find on a toy or plastic model, and the other is an actual glove for the suit actor to use).
