sylentwulfie made an interesting request, that of Red as a WW1 'Tommy' (nickname for WW1 British/Canadian soldiers) but based on a drawing by a WW1 Soldier, Gunner Ross Wiggs. Seen here https://www.whytes.ie/images/archiv.....1017/153_1.jpg

Very interestingly, I think the attitude toward Tommy Atkins changed very dramatically during and after World War I, when Tommy was no longer the margins of society, but likely the man next door.

I looked it up: interestingly, Canadian soldiers (Canadians were regarded as high-quality shock troops) were referred to as "Tommy Canuck." Newfoundland's regiment (it was then a separate political entity) was the "Blue Puttees."
