Here is a quick awl that I made since I lost my other one, which is fine because it was a cheap ugly store bought one anyway-
The awl here is made from a length of thin coil spring that I had uncoiled using my gasoline blow torch and some pliers as well. The gasoline blowtorch was capable of heating this wire up to a bright yellow heat and I was able to forge it to to a taper as well as establish a tang for it.
It was then hardened and tempered to a purple colour to give it springiness as well as some strength when going through fabrics and leather.
The ferrule is a section of brass from a bullet casing that I scored with a tube cutter before cutting it with a jewelry saw. It allowed for less distortion of the edges of the tube. The wood is a small section of some wheel barrow handle.
I was getting rather bored of this weather and I wanted to forge something, albeit it was very light forge work I managed to make something nice that works.
