During the interregnum, these girls (usually) captured from enemy kingdoms, instead of going to the slave or harems, took on the middle role, the most comfortable one – the role of Fitzim. A woman who comforted, provided company, and was capable of active participation, attending gatherings or celebrations of various nobles. However, they were never forced into sex; on the contrary, Fitzim were regarded as equals, those who would listen first, not do, those who could brighten up a boring evening.

Fitzim lived in separate sections of the polis, closer to the abodes of nobles or merchants – women's quarters, where they led a very ordinary life. Fitzim received money, housing, and immunity from ordinary citizens for their work.

The murder of a Fitzim (in particular, the favorites of some nobles) was regarded as the murder of a high-ranking person, for which the criminal could either be sent to rot forever in the prison, or he could even be executed
